Self Care, Self Love

You might be losing friends as you get older, but it’s okay.

It happens to all of us. We make friends in different periods of our lives that we think are going to be around forever. What no one tells you about growing older is that losing friends is just part of the process. If you’re feeling lost or upset about certain relationships in your life, here are some things to think about.

People just simply grow apart

As we get older, our life starts to make a little more sense. We are finding ourselves, starting new chapters, and realizing what is actually important in life. Sadly, losing friends tends to happen, even if we don’t want it to. We’re all on different paths, and there is nothing wrong with that! I’m not going to lie, there are a lot of friendships and relationships that I had with people from the past that I am glad I outgrew. Growth means change, and it is a sign that you are evolving into who you were meant to be.

Physical distance, duh

In my mid-twenties, I made some incredibly strong connections that I still hold onto this day. While I’m not losing those friends, the physical distance between us is pretty big. Two of my best friends live in the San Francisco area, and my best friend of all time moved to Richmond at the beginning of the year.

Just because there is that physical distance between you and a close friend, that doesn’t mean you’re losing them as a friend. I look at it in a way that makes the chances I do get to see them that much better. You can also use platforms such as Instagram to maintain that connection, no matter where you live.

Opens the way for new friendships

Lastly, the best part of losing friends that didn’t align with your life is that you are opening up that space to create a new relationship with someone else. If you’re like me, then you might know how hard it is to make friendships as you get older. What this actually means is that (most of the time) new people that come into your life are more mature, and don’t feel like wasting their time! You can create a bond that is far more honest and strong than the relationships you made when you were youner.

I feel like ever since I had kids the distance between my good friends and I has just continued to increase. Never have the time or energy to get together like we used to, which sucks!
