How I actually get work done when I travel

While working online might seem like the dream, it can get pretty stressful when it comes time to travel. If you ask any family members that I have, they will let you know that I try and stay off my computer or phone as much as possible, but that only is because I have created a routine that actually lets me get work done even if I’m traveling!

Plan ahead!

This is something that I always do. It doesn’t matter if I’m going to be gone for a weekend or a month, I make sure that I have as much as done as I can! In order to get work done when I travel I start by planning out how many days I’m going to be gone, and I will figure out how much work I have to get done in that time period. Since I also am doing my MBA online, my workload can be heavy!

I’ll start planning everything out when it is about a month out of a trip, this is primarily for longer trips, or trips that are out of the country. I’ll sacrifice some time that I would take to do other things in order to get my work done. While it isn’t a fun thing to say, it’s true! As a matter of fact, I’m working ahead as I write this post for my trip to Italy in a few weeks!

Create a routine

I create a routine to get work done while I travel, but also as part of how I plan ahead. As I mentioned, I compare what I have to do while I’m on my trip so that I can manage everything. When I do work while I travel, I have designated times when I work, and I’ll get into that in a minute! I’m a huge advocate of working on something when you feel like it! There are days where I do a ton of work, and there are days when I don’t. Creating a routine is an easy way just to stay organized. Traveling can be stressful enough, honestly!

Use your time wisely!

Seriously though! You would be surprised at how much time you can waste in a day. It always seems like I tend to waste MORE time when I have things I need to do. Part of my routine is just working when I feel like it unless there is something that NEEDS to be done, then I just suck it up and do it!

Even when I have to get work done while I travel, I still make sure that I’m using my time as best I can. If I’m on a train, ferry, or plane, I make sure to use that time to get ahead of anything that I need to get done. It allows me to enjoy my trip without feeling like I am pressured to get something done.
