Don’t be afraid of the unfollow button

In the age of social media, it can seem like we need to follow everyone, love everything, and almost not have an opinion. I grew up in an era before social media, and it seriously was a different time. If you didn’t like someone, then you just cut them out of your life. It wasn’t a game of popularity. There were no online reputations, you were not defined by numbers, and you couldn’t get paid for telling someone where you got your favorite shirt. Now, we have to worry about what someone would think if we used to unfollow button. Let me be the first to tell you, use it! It’s your best friend and can save you a world of irritation down the line.

It’s your life, you control it

While we may not control the social media sites themselves, we do control our own personal accounts. If something is not lining up with your values or morals, there is no contract that you sign that says you have to forget about those. If you dislike politics, you aren’t forced to be subjected to someone else’s views. Don’t be afraid to use the unfollow button, seriously. Your choices don’t have to be justified. If you feel the need to justify your actions to others, then that is an entirely different issue.

Your confidence could be at stake

The biggest issue that is talked about in the social media world is inferiority. Personally, this is something that it took me a long time to deal with and grow out of. If someone that you are following makes you feel inferior, or any feeling, they have to go. The unfollow button could act as an immediate solution to those feelings. It is important to remember that social media is not real life, and people only show what they want you to see.

Since I started a new Instagram, I’ve been using an app to track my stats. It is actually shocking how many users follow/unfollow still! One of the apps I use lets me see who is engaging with my posts, and who isn’t. That kind of information really shows me the integrity of someone.

Marie Kondo was onto something

If something is not bringing you joy, then it really has no place in your life. Social media is no different. They gave the name “influencers” for a specific reason after all. Look into what you’re surrounding yourself with. If you even hesitate about it, then it probably should leave your space. The unfollow button can seem like a negative thing, but it really is creating a more positive space for you to reside in. If I find myself following someone that isn’t serving me or my goals, then they aren’t going to be around for much longer.

What about your creativity?

Almost every time I log onto social media, I see someone copying something else. Granted, there are not really such things as organic ideas anymore. It seems like almost everything has been done by now. No matter what kind of content you are creating, it is special because it is yours. As much as I hate to admit it, there will always be someone who is doing something better than you. If someone is having a negative impact on your own creativity, then they have to go! Additionally, if you catch yourself trying to be like someone else, that is equally as bad!

I agree. People take these unfollows way too serious. Not everyone is going to want to follow you. Maybe the conent is not in alignment with them or maybe they just don’t want to follow anymore. Doesn’t mean something is wrong with you, it just means that now someone else can follow who truly wants to. Great post.

I love using the unfollow button especially when I feel like someone I am following is making me feel different about myself. Or if they no longer inspire me. But I also like to support others who support me.

Oh for sure, if it is mutual support then I’ll happily stay following.

I never used to unfollow people, Until recently. I used to follow a few thousand people, lots of those accounts were either dead or completely not in relation to my interests. Thankfully now I am only following those who’s accounts I genuinely enjoy meaning I am actually engaging with people more often. -xo

Same here girl! I have made it a point to not just follow someone because they followed me, but to only follow someone if I like their content.
