When was the last time that you made a bad decision? Chances are, it wasn’t too far in the past. Our decisions have a direct impact on our daily life in terms of how we think, what we say, and what we do. The truth is, you can stop making bad decisions! You just need to know why you are making them, and a few ways to start making better ones.
Why Do We Make Bad Decisions?
When it comes to making bad decisions, we have all done. Typically, we all do it for the exact same reasons. We are either looking for a shortcut out of a situation, we are trying to impress others, or we are simply self-sabotaging our way to misery. While these are some of the most common reasons, there are tons of reasons why we are making bad decisions. By understanding why you are doing it, you can stop making bad decisions!
You’re Overthinking It
If you have ever had to make an important decision, then you know exactly what I am talking about. You have thought about it so much that you are just running yourself into the ground. While this is very common, it is also easy to stop making bad decisions because of this! Instead of thinking something into exhaustion, try to give it some breathing room. Allow a good amount of time to think about something, but try not to drive it into the ground.
You are Not Giving It Enough Thought
On the opposite side, you may not being giving it enough thought. This is most often seen if you are having to make a last minute decision, or if you are just over it! Even small decisions can have serious impacts on every aspect of our lives. While you do not need to overthink your decisions, you need to give them the time that they deserve in order to make sure you are making the right decision.
You are Running Off of Your Emotions
Listen, we all have been here! We all have made decisions based on how we are feeling in a particular moment. Typically, these decisions are based on our emotions are not the best decision we could have made. You should always allow your emotions or thoughts to calm down before making any important decisions to avoid a regret later.
How to Start Making Better Decisions
It is easier than you think to stop making bad decisions. I am sharing three of my favorite tips that I use to help make better decisions on a regular basis. If you are looking for more tips, I highly suggest this article from the Harvard Business Review!
So many of us are running at 100mph. Even though the world may be telling you that you need to do everything at once, you don’t have to. You have to take the time to slow down and give your decision a breather! By slowing down, you can take in everything surrounding your decision such as, who is involved, what is involved, and what it means for your future. When you slow down, you may also figure out a decision that may even be better than the one you had in mind.
Listen to Your Intuition
There are seriously so many of us who just ignore our intuition. We think that our feelings are invalid, or that we messed up one time, so wouldn’t we just mess up again? Personally, every time I have not listened to how I feel about a situation, I always made the wrong choice. If you are not connected with your intuition, try using small steps each day to start building that relationship based on trust. This may look as simple as dressing how you want to dress, or eating what you want for breakfast. It does not have to be rocket science!
Write it Out if You Have to!
This is my most annoying tip, but it is one that I have possibly used the most! If I am unsure about a decision, then I always write out the pros and cons of both sides that I am contemplating. Granted, I do not do this for decisions like what I’m going to have for breakfast, but for more professional or personal decisions, this is a great step to do!
