The problem with not being relatable

If you spend any amount of time on the internet or social media, then you have probably seen the huge push towards authenticity over the past year. I think the main reason that this has happened is become the world of influencers and bloggers were fully guilty of not being relatable.

If you’re currently on social media, or trying to get into the blogosphere, then here are some reasons why you should avoid the dreaded phase of not being relatable to your viewers, readers, or followers.

not being relatable

Most of the time, you’re not being true to who you are

In all honesty, I’ve totally been there. When I first started three years ago, I thought that just being myself wasn’t good enough. I didn’t have a life that anyone would be interested in. My entire life was seriously upside down, and I’m just now getting it back on track (I think!). If you’re not being yourself, then there is no way you can be relatable. I’m just being honest!

While I follow people who I just am interested in, most of the individuals I follow both on social media and in terms of blogs are just themselves. Most of the time, we are more interested in the actual person instead of what they are showing us. If you ever feel like you’re not being relatable, then you might need to try out a self-audit!

People will be uninterested

This actually goes for real life too. If you’re constantly showing the high points in life, how many things you own, or only focusing on yourself, people will stop caring. I spent many years of my life not caring about others, and my relationships really suffered from that! If you’re not being relatable, then people just aren’t going to want to see what you’re up to!

Some of my favorite people to follow might have a different lifestyle than me, but we have the same interests or hobbies. Even though I’m not on a yacht in the Amalfi Coast right now, I still love seeing people doing that exact thing! I think Instagram Stories really helped with authenticity, and it gives a peek into the lives of the people you enjoy following.

not being relatable

It can be so incredibly damaging!

Every time I think about social media, I am so thankful that I didn’t grow up with social media ruling everything. Social media itself is really damaging to self-esteem, and portraying an unrealistic life can be equally as damaging, if the person isn’t meaning to do it.

Just because you have an amazing life, it doesn’t mean that’s all you need to show. Don’t be afraid to show your hard times, your off days, honestly, people like that so much more! You don’t want to be the reason someone feels not good enough because they don’t have the hottest handbag, or like they are not good enough because they have to work instead of traveling the world. Everyone is on their own path!

This post is spot on! I think that sometimes we get caught up in the idea of perfection and showing only the best and most “perfect” parts of our lives that we lose ourselves on the way! It’s so important to be real and yourself. It’s okay to show those less “perfect” moments as they are part of us! No one’s life is perfect 24/7

So true girl! That’s how we made friends as children, and that’s how we will continue to make friends as adults!

I completely agree! I follow blogs and social media influencers because I enjoy what they are doing as opposed to what they are showing. It’s a hard balance to find but authenticity is something we all strive for.
