The beginning of a new year is always special to me. I see it as a great time to start new habits or new rituals, and it is such a motivating time in general. It seems that almost everyone is working on becoming the best version of themselves. Since many of us are still figuring things out, here is my new year self-care routine that you can use too!
I decided that this was going to be the year that I did not live on my phone. When I wake up in the morning, I get up and go about my day. I spend time with the dogs, go wash my face, and take my medicine, just normal things. By spending at least twenty minutes off of my phone, I find myself more productive.
When I do decide to pick up my phone, I only check what I need to. I check texts or voicemails, my email, and the schedule I have for the day to see what I need to get done. Avoiding social media for as long as possible keeps me busy with things that I actually need to do. This is also a great time to work on your journals and meditation.
After I eat my breakfast, I allow myself to check any social media. I love doing this as the first part of my new year self-care routine because I have a tendency to disassociate from the real world. Living in my home with my boyfriend and dogs helps set my tone for the rest of the day.
I am usually quite good at knowing what I need to do each day. There are times where I need to check a calendar or schedule for work, but I usually remember everything. I have mentioned time blocking in the past and how it is great for those who work from home. I try and crank out as much work as I can during the morning and early afternoon.
Midday is also the time when I try to clean the house. This means I don’t have to deal with anything at night or early the next day. We have the iRobot Vacuum and iRobot Mop which I can run anytime and it helps seriously cut down on dirt, hair, and muddy paw prints from the dogs.
During the middle of the day, I will also make myself a nice lunch if I notice my energy dropping. Not only does cooking excite me, but having a nice meal can almost act as a mind and body refresh!
The evening hours are where my new year self care routine really starts to shine. If you know me, then you know that a nice hot bath is always on my list. It gives me time to think, it is a great way to wind down from the day, and I also can catch up on my favorite Youtubers.
Cooking has also been a really important part of my life over the past year or so. Cooking brings me so much joy and I love to try new recipes. Once I decide what to make, I will cook dinner and we always like to watch a show together before heading to bed.
I go through my nightly skincare routine and get ready for bed. Depending on my mood I will either spend time listening to an audiobook, reading an actual book, or listening to ASMR or meditation before bed. I find these cut down on the brain noise!
