What the Instagram Blackout should have taught you about social media

I’m not going to lie. I felt a little bit lost without Instagram to carelessly scroll through throughout the day. As important as social media might be, it was a great reminder of the importance of having a physical blog. All I saw on my timelines were people stressing out about Instagram, and it really got me thinking about a lot of things. Here is everything that I learned during the Instagram Blackout!

Don’t rely on social media

I’ve mentioned this before in 5 reasons to keep blogging, but I’ll mention it again. Those platforms could be taken away from you any second. You should never put your livelihood in the hands of someone else. If you’re an instablogger, then this should be a wake-up call to you! Having your own blog is essential to your success. Long-form content isn’t going anywhere, and the best thing is that no one can take it away from you! I made an entire post about how to start a blog in under 15 minutes, plus you can always reach out to me on social for additional help!

Social media IS that important

On the contrary, social media is an incredible tool! My Twitter feed was literally filled with people all day talking about Instagram and Facebook. As someone who works in social media, I felt weird not being able to do my job. While we have social media, use it to its’ full advantage! Make sure you’re using the right social channels, and make sure that you’re engaging to build a community in case we have another Instagram blackout. You want to drive traffic to your blog, and turn them into subscribers! Nothing is as important as landing in their inbox!

The influence of social media is insane

The word influencer makes me cringe. I know that those who are considered “influencers” feel the same way, but it is kind of true. Think about how many people were freaking out about the Instagram Blackout. Those are all people that you can market too! If you want to rock social media, the best thing to do is just to be yourself. As that movie that I watched one time because I was forced to says, “If you build it, they will come”.
