If you have spent any amount of time on the internet, then you have likely experience imposter syndrome at one point or another. The truth is that even the biggest names in the industry experience it. Some good news is that even though it is common to experience imposter syndrome, you can still beat it!
What is Imposter Syndrome?
While you can find an educated definition on what this actually means, I think it is important to share what I think it is and how I view it. To me, IS is the feeling of self-doubt as it relates to your skills and creation process in comparison to others. Think of it this way, if you are seeing other bloggers create amazing content and you don’t like what you are making, this may apply to you.
It’s important to know that imposter syndrome looks different for everyone. Even though this is how I view it, you may view it a completely different way. I highly recommend you create your own definition of what IS is. This way you can learn to identify signals and signs as to why you feel that way.
Why do we experience imposter syndrome?
As I said, it is different for everyone. For some people, it may be in their workplace when they are in a meeting. For others, it may be on social media when they don’t get as many likes as they want. If you have ever felt like you didn’t belong with a group of people or in a situation, then you probably have felt like you were an imposter, hence the name!
IS can stem back to confidence issues you have in yourself in terms of what you are making or what you think you are able to do. It can also be something that has to deal with your anxiety. If you have high levels of anxiety, you may even experience this more.
How Can You Beat Imposter Syndrome?
Now that we have covered the basics, let’s talk about ways we can beat imposter syndrome and get back to living our best lives, right?! Even though it may take some time, imposter syndrome is something that you can overcome with time and some effort. Here are a few of my top tips!
Stop Looking for Perfection
No joke, the worst thing you can do is put too much pressure on yourself. As someone who used to deal with perfectionism, it does nothing for you. Your unique traits and preferences are what make the world go round, and you don’t want to be like everyone else! Just because someone has found success doing something one way, you don’t have to do the same thing!
Say Goodbye to anyone or anything that makes you feel less
Listen, I am a big fan of the unfollow button. If anyone makes me think less of myself, they are outta here! You need to remember that you don’t have to follow anyone. No one is paying you, and even your family can get over it. Your feed, no matter where it is, should be full of things and people you like and that inspire you to be the best version of yourself. Instagram can be a huge benefit to you as a blogger or creator, but it can also suck the life out of you.
Figure out Why you are feeling the way you are
As I mentioned earlier, you need to find key factors when your imposter syndrome pops up. Maybe writing them down makes them a bigger signal in your brain! If you know it pops up when you post online, take some time to figure ways that you can better your process, or something else that you can do!
Always be learning
This is something my mother always told me to do when I was younger. If you don’t know how to do something, figure it out. Afraid of something? Do it so that you are no longer afraid. We have an endless supply of knowledge at our fingertips right now. There is no excuse to make yourself feel bad or less than anyone else because something is new to you.
