I created my own shampoo and conditioner with Formulate, and this is what I actually think…

Unless you’re currently living under a rock, then you have heard all of the hype over the past few years about custom shampoo and conditioner. I finally caved in and placed an order with Formulate to see what all of the fuss is about.

Formulate

The actual process

You’re not going into some lab to create your shampoo and conditioner. What you do is you answer a few questions related to your specific hair type. I have a lot of hair, and it has even more problems! They ask your hair type, length, color, and a few more things so they can get a solid understanding of your hair.

The last few steps are letting Formulate know what you’re wanting from the products. For me, I wanted hydration, repair, and pretty much anything that would bring my hair back to life. Seriously. You can also pick your scent, as well as the strength of the scent. I picked the heaviest scent in the Tidal option.

What actually happened

I made an effort to not read any reviews before I tried Formulate. One of the biggest reasons I chose not to was so that I didn’t have any preconceptions of the product. I’ll quickly get the basics out of the way…

The scent was almost herbal in a way. I did not get any sort of “beach-like” scent, but that definitely wasn’t a deal-breaker in any way. I was slightly disappointed in the strength of the scent. It is not as strong as I had expected, and it doesn’t last too long.

The Formulate instructions say to use four pumps of both the shampoo and conditioner. Even though I thought that was quite excessive, I gave it a whirl the past few times I’ve washed my hair. Surprisingly, it seemed like the right amount for my hair. If you have fine or short hair, I don’t think you need that much product!

I’ve used the combo the past five times I have washed my hair. That is pretty much my standard when it comes to using a new shampoo and conditioner. All other variables have stayed the same, and I’m not the biggest fan of the products.

Why I’m not in love with Formulate

Each time I used the products, they left my hair feeling overly greasy. Considering the fact that I have incredibly thick and coarse curly hair, my hair doesn’t really get greasy. There have been multiple times where I have had to wash my hair with other products to get the feeling out.

My hair is a process! For me to wash my hair and then have to rewash it shortly after is honestly just an inconvenience. While that might be a first-world problem, it is annoying enough for me not to repurchase the products.

Thanks for this! I’ve been curious about Formulate but I’ve never really seen any bloggers talk about not liking it, although I’ve never sought out reviews either. So I’m glad you did! I definitely can’t stand washing my hair a lot. I have color-treated hair so washing my hair that often would be a total dealbreaker for me!
