How to Find Your Purpose in Life and Start Making the Changes You Want and Need
How many times in your life have you felt like you had no purpose? Unless you are a magical creature, probably quite a few times. Losing sight of who we are can happen to anyone, and it is part of life. The good news is that you can actually find your purpose in life all over again, and it will not be as hard as you think it is.
Why Do We Need to Find Our Purpose in Life?
Before we get started, do you actually need to find a purpose in life? If you ask anyone, they can probably tell you what they think their purpose is. While you do not really need to know your purpose, it does help you live your life to the fullest. Knowing the purpose of your life helps provide you with clarity. This clarity can influence your decisions which will directly impact your life.
Knowing your purpose can also help you make serious decisions such as relationships and professional circumstances. Ideally, we would all be working jobs that we love and we would be highly successful at them. Well guess what, some people are actually doing that, and that is because they found their purpose, and they took action to follow it.
Questions You Need to Ask Yourself
It may seem impossible to find your purpose in life, but it is not as hard as you think. Often times we make things 100 times harder than they have to be. Here are five questions that you can ask yourself to help you get started to finding your life purpose.
- What Makes You Excited?
- What Do You Want to Be Known For?
- Where Do You Think You Can Make a Difference for Others?
- What Do You Get the Most Enjoyment Out of?
- If Money Were Not Involved, What Would You Do For Free?
What is Ikigai?
If you are new to the blog or even me, then you may not know that I have a deep and intense connection to Japan. The first time I went there, I really felt connected and changed. Ikigai is a Japanese term that is essentially your purpose. A lot of Japanese individuals consider it the reason why they wake up in the morning. It is a practical lifestyle method that consists of four different aspects.
- What You Love (your passion)
- What the World Needs (your mission)
- What You are Good At (your vocation)
- What You Can Get Paid For (your profession)
If you read this article from Forbes, it is going to go into a lot more detail, but I am going to quickly sum it up for you. Ikigai has a graph of four overlapping circles. These circles represent one of the four different aspects, but at one point, they all overlap. This is your Ikigai or your purpose. It is where your passion, your mission, your vocation, and your profession all align in perfect harmony.
3 Ways to Find Your Purpose in Life
Make sure you are constantly learning! We are ever-changing creatures! What you wanted and loved 10 years ago is likely not the same as it is now. Try and expose yourself to different cultures, different ideas, and different people to make sure that you are on the right track for your life.
Keep a journal. A journal is a perfect place for you to write down the answers to the questions I listed above. You can also write down lists of things that make you happy, things you love doing, and anything else that comes to mind. There is something magical about writing down our thoughts that can help us actually put our ideas into action and receive what we are calling to us.
Connect with others as often as you can. We live in the age of technology, and connecting with others has never been easier. Connecting with others not only allows you to expand your mindset, but you can also see where your purpose may lie. This can also help you be more open which is a great way to take the fear out of following your dreams and overcoming your doubts!
