Why I didn’t follow you on Instagram

I know that I’ve been talking a lot about Instagram on the blog lately, but it is something I have been working on, and it has actually been kind of exciting for me. I’ve been trying new methods, I’ve been focusing on building a community instead of my numbers, basically, it has been great. While numbers are not important, figuring out why you aren’t growing IS important, and I’ve broken in down into three reasons why I didn’t follow you on Instagram.

I don’t feel inspired

One of the biggest reasons I didn’t follow you on Instagram is because I didn’t feel inspired by your feed. As people, we tend to focus a lot on how something makes us feel. We love ice cream because it makes us feel good, we listen to music because we enjoy it, and we get inspired by pictures because we like them. When I’m inspired, I create my best content, and I find myself more motivated to create.

Your posts look like every other post

Having been on social media for quite a few years now, I notice that a lot of accounts almost look the same. Going on the same trips, wearing the same outfits, using the same quotes from Legally Blonde. Side note: Not that there is anything wrong with my girl Elle Woods. People think you need to fit into a certain mold to get anywhere in life, and Instagram is no exception to that misconception. Another reason I didn’t follow you on Instagram is that you were trying to fit in. You can’t get anywhere in life by pretending to be someone your not, so create content that you love.

Your photos may not be great

Hi, it is your resident blogger who has no photography background. When I say your photos aren’t great, maybe the quality isn’t there. As we all know, photography is a skill that you develop over time. Maybe your shots are blurry, maybe they all look the same, maybe you just haven’t found your style yet. If you’re struggling to figure this out, search for inspiration on Instagram and save some photos that you like. *Side Note #2: Do not copy someone’s photos, ever. If someone didn’t follow your Instagram account, it might be time to reevaluate your feed.

Okay, I thought it was just me who was tired of seeing the same quotes over and over. And yessss, it is so annoying copying someone else’s photo style. I can’t stand it. I don’t follow over curated accounts. It just doesn’t seem real to me.

I do an extent, but I prefer someone to show who they really are through their account!

I don’t know I feel like it’s all subjective. From finding a niche, to finding your audience, to being relatable, I feel like there’s a tip for everything. I don’t like to follow people that are over the top because let’s be real, you can’t be over the top every single day! But for the most part, I don’t follow people because I can’t relate. If you are always selling me something, there’s no value in that. I also read captions because that’s how I know the person behind the screen. Your IG can be great but if I can’t relate, I won’t follow you.

I totally agree! If there isn’t some level of a “real” person to it, it’s hard for me to enjoy their feed.
