I chose to delete my Instagram account in order to have a completely fresh start. Since Instagram is the biggest social platform for bloggers and creators alike, I knew I had to do it. I had been toying around with the idea for a few months, and it got to a point where I just couldn’t stand it anymore. Here is a rundown of a few things I learned after deleting my Instagram account.
Instgram made me realize that authenticity is everything
Social media started as something enjoyable. We were able to share our world, connect with others, and see more of the world that we live in. What we did not expect was the importance of how we were perceived through a screen. It became easier than ever to fake the life that we wanted to have. It was easy to make everything look fun, bright, and perfect. People have even based careers off of what they put on social media. Once everyone realized this was a possibility, people began faking it.
Buying followers, views, likes, it all can be done in about fifteen seconds from any device. That’s how important it is. People are actually buying their way into an industry. By deleting my Instagram account, I stripped back the person I was trying to portray. I started over, and immediately started to connect with people who actually liked my content, what a concept! Authenticity is one of the most important parts of creating content. As someone who not only creates but also consumes, it is pretty easy to pinpoint if someone is being themselves.
Quality over quantity
Just because your favorite blogger is posting three times a day, you don’t have to do that. The most irritating thing about the digital world is how quickly everything moves. I used to feel like I had to post at certain times just to stay relevant, but that is not exactly the case. Posting content that you love is more important than keeping up with your Instagram feed. Also, your followers are going to appreciate it way more! Deleting my Instagram made me realize that what I am posting is so much more important than
Instead of just posting something to post it, I’ve actually taken the time to think about it. If you know me at all, I’m usually quite spontaneous, and I don’t plan things too often. This is where an app comes in to help me keep my Instagram organized! I love Preview which allows me to make sure that my photo I’m adding fits in with the rest of my feed. It also will show you some analytics as well! Average likes, average comments, and even the best hashtags for you! Best of all, it’s free!
Use your hashtags!
Instagram allows you to use up to thirty hashtags on a photo. There are people who will say that you shouldn’t use that many, but I mean, why not? When Instagram introduced the ability to follow hashtags, I was able to find users that I love to follow, and it has created my feed so much more interesting as well. If you have the Preview App, then you can use it to find hashtags that are performing well for you. Once you have that, you can make lists of hashtags that you can use. I keep them in my phone for easy access.
Another amazing tool for finding hashtags is the Tailwind Hashtag Finder. You can use this even with a free trial to Tailwind that is connected to your Instagram account. You are free to add your own hashtags, but it will also suggest hashtags that are relevant to the caption that you have put into the draft. Pro Tip: I just copy and paste my caption into the finder, and then I copy and paste it with the hashtags added. I even save the sets of hashtags I create in the notes section of my phone for easy access.
